This is the 2018 Toyota RAV4 vs 2020 Toyota RAV4 comparison. The Toyota RAV4 has just been replaced and it’s a completely new model designed for the next decade! We like the old one and used actually own one hence the lack of comparison due to bias, however that’s changed as there is now an all new model. We’re using the 2020 model year as a description for the new RAV4 because at trade it time that is probably what it will be described as despite having a build date of 2019, important at trade in of sale time.
2018 Toyota RAV4 vs 2020 Toyota RAV4 exterior design : The old RAV4 was quite a departure from the original design brief for the first RAV4 in the 1990’s, was that it looked and felt youthful and fun design and usable. That changed quickly and the 2018/19 RAV4 is a completely different proposition to the original. It’s basically a high rise conservative looking Corolla wagon. That’s not a bad thing but it’s not a great either in terms of looks. The new RAV4 is different from the last model using contemporary design of other models so it’s not exactly a design leader like the latest Mitsubishi SUVs for example. The latest RAV4 visually relates to the North American Tacoma and Fortuner SUVs which are real 4WDs. We were expecting more urban design related to the CH-R or the Kluger, clearly this not the case but inevitably where that next regeneration of Toyota designs are heading. The new RAV4 does look newer and that’s the best thing that we can say about it.
2018 Toyota RAV4 vs 2020 Toyota RAV4 interior: The old RAV4 interior is a nice place to be and strangely better in real life than the pictures suggest. Everything is the quality you’d expect and even the hard plastics on the dash which any normal person wouldn’t touch looks good enough. It’s a Corolla in terms of space apart from the larger rear end which is quite large. However it does feel dated due to the way the buttons worked and instruments. In comparison the new RAV4’s interior is a noticeable upgrade in terms of style, looking and feels like a 2020 model should. It looks like a larger but less stylish CH-R in terms of design but much more interesting to look at than many other competitors. The tablet centre screen is not attractive and as usual looks like an afterthought although we’re sure hundreds of hours where spent pondering on it’s placement and design. The new interior is a more upmarket place to be in that the older RAV4 and on a similar but not quite the same level as it’s newer competitors.
2018 Toyota RAV4 vs 2020 Toyota RAV4 engines and technology: The old RAV4 was certainly a product of it’s time with just the basics in terms of safety and engines. Over the model cycle and around the world, there are a number of petrol and diesel engine options, all with decent power and tech for the time. Safety systems where also a product of the time with headlining ABS and traction control with multiple airbags which where state of the art for it’s time but not in 2019. In comparison the new RAV4 is a tech powerhouse compared to the old model and it’s competitors. Most models are equipped with a hybrid engine, auto brakes, and a suite of nice but less useful safety systems we call gimmicks these days. The most important are auto emergency brakes which do work.
2018 Toyota RAV4 vs 2020 Toyota RAV4 : The prior generation RAV4 is a little firm but absorbent when dealing with road bumps and overall quite unexciting. We don’t know how Toyota had managed to engineer out all the character from the driving experience… but they did. Not quiet or noisy, not hard or soft suspension just a competent smallish SUV. We haven’t driven the new RAV4 yet but that’s coming soon.
The conclusion to the 2018 Toyota RAV4 vs 2020 Toyota RAV4 comparison is simple: The new RAV4 is the better buy for roughy the same price but with much more standard equipment especially in the engine department. It is clearly an upgrade to the older RAV4 so it’s competitors are really where the genuine comparisons lie. We can’t see the point of buying an older generation RAV4 unless significantly cheaper than the new one!
