This is the new Honda CR-V Vs the Mazda CX-5 comparison for 2024. These two models where direct competitors for so many years until the 2025 CR-V. That is because new CR-V is much larger than the current CX-5 at the time of this post,   although their prices are still comparable the CX-5 is generally cheaper. So how does the newest CR-V compare to the older CX-5?

Honda CR-V Vs the Mazda CX-5 exterior comparison: The new CR-V exterior design can be called many things and we call it bland or generic. It is also much like the VW Tiguan in appearance which we use the same description. There must be some overwhelming commercial reason for the styling language change for Honda. In comparison the CX-5 still looks good and certainly sportier design but familiarity via numbers on the road date the design. The last exterior refresh was a a little underdone.

New Honda CR-V Vs the Mazda CX-5 interior comparison: The interior design of the CR-V is essentially a copy of the Honda Civic. As a result it looks and feels minimal, a little retro but class average in terms of materials which is pretty good. We like the design. In comparison the CX-5 is a little more compact but still nicely designed and high quality materials. Mind you after 6 years it does look a little dated. In more expensive model grades it does feel more upmarket. With the huge prices increased for both models of 10-20% these are not as affordable as they used be but least you don’t feel short changed on the inside in either SUV.

2025 Honda CR-V Vs the Mazda CX-5 engine and technology comparison: The addition of the hybrid engine option on the top range Honda CRV is nice but a little late and to restricted to higher model grades. Hybrid drive trains are so much more complex than electric so we understand the price difference. However since Honda have their own tech and Toyota started licensing their tech there shouldn’t be such a difference. Apart from that there are no other standout tech features on the CRV. In comparison the CX-5 doesn’t have a Hybrid option yet but offers a high powered petrol version to compensate. Both models are comfortable and quiet with only the size difference – not a tech feature though.

The conclusion and winner of the new Honda CR-V Vs the Mazda CX-5 comparison is a draw. We broke our own rule in regards to automatic Hybrid winners in this instance because the CRV is essentially the old CRV in a larger body. Since the CRV design is so boring and that the CX-5 still looks great after all these years there is no justification for it not win or lose either. Besides as we’ve said many times the Mazda engines are the most advanced out there in efficiency and power. Mind you it still can’t a Hybrid engine in terms for fuel consumption.
