Welcome to the comparison between the all new Mazda CX-9 Vs Toyota Kluger comparison. With the release of the all new ‘2017’ Mazda CX-9 in July 2016 we checked it out and came away impressed. So we decided to do a new set of comparisons against the existing medium to large sized SUV currently available. First off the list is the Toyota Kluger comparison as we consider it a benchmark in the class. Just remember that both are not off-road SUV focused and not sports cars either so if that it what you are expecting you should;t be even considering these two SUVs.

Mazda CX-9 Vs Toyota Kluger exterior comparison: No question the CX-9 looks great, nice lines and details. Sure the base model lacks a few details that the top range model has to differentiate it but that is the purpose after all. The Kluger on the other hand it a typical Toyota having mostly American styling clues and box like, it looks Ok overall. This means it looks bigger than the CX-9 but in reality it is a little smaller. Easy win to the CX-9 in this part.

Mazda CX-9 Vs Toyota Kluger interior comparison: The Kluger has a great interior design to maximise space and flexibility for passengers while the CX-9 is not up to the same level. While the design and quality is good it also seems to have more space than the CX-9 despite the exterior size being smaller. However the CX-9 feels a nicer place to be especially for the front passengers with great design styling use of materials. The seating position in the CX-9 is interesting as we think the pedals are too far forward and seat a little high. The Kluger’s interior while spacious doesn’t feel as up market but it still a good place to but in.

Mazda CX-9 Vs Toyota Kluger engines and technology comparison: Both have petrol engines and basic but optional AWD systems. There is lots of standard equipment on both and it will depend on which one is more important to you. The CX-9 has better safety features including auto braking which is far more useful that a flashing light on the Kluger. Many say that the petrol engines are a disadvantage but we don’t think so. The potentially higher fuel use in heavy city traffic is off set by cheaper servicing and the requirement for diesel engine to go for a long high drive usually every month, to clean out the particulate filter. Who really has the time to for a 2 -3 hour drive every month just to clean out the diesel filter and more to the point the extra diesel use to that?

Mazda CX-9 Vs Toyota Kluger drive comparison: The Kluger represents refinement and safe handling in the class. It’s does everything well as far as we could tell. It’s quiet, handles, drives fine overall. There are annoyances like non-progressive braking and light power steering but it not anything that you can easily adapt to. We are yet to drive the new CX-9.

The conclusion is … we’d buy the CX-9 because it it new. I looks good to be in and from the outside which is over half the task of selling the car in the first place. The price comparison between the Kluger and CX-9 shows the Kluger to be on the high side.
