This is the new Toyota RAV4 vs Kia Sportage comparison for 2019. The Kia Sportage has been around for a few years now and despite that and with a small refresh it’s still a modern, good looking smallish SUV. The new RAV4 is a generational upgrade with new styling and technology in line with the rest of their model range.
Toyota RAV4 vs Kia Sportage exterior design : We like the Kia Sportage exterior design, it’s different from most of the other mainstream brands and hasn’t dated like it’s donor the Hyundai Tucson. The Sportage looks more upmarket and non-Korean which is a good thing, more in line with European designs. The RAV4 design looks similar to other Toyota’s like the Tacoma and 4Runner yet it similar to the Jeep Grand Cherokee in the angles rear profile and overall a derivative design. It’s not a premium looking SUV but it doesn’t look like a cheap one either it looks like a Toyota.
Toyota RAV4 vs Kia Sportage interior: The interior of the Sportage in the higher end model grade trim levels is very nice and feels European in it’s design. Over time it’s materials have lost the premium look and feel and for lower end models in the $30,000-$40000 SUV class and the top range trim with a $50,000 price is on the lower end in terms of look and feel. The RAV4 feels modern and contemporary and looks and feels as it’s price indicates but the only real issue being the tablet style screen that looks cheap. The Sportage is not a big SUV and it does feel las spacious the the RAV4 although not in the rear. We think the Sportage aspires to VW values of nice looking and feeling interior at a cheaper price, which worked 3 years ago but needs an update in 2019.
Toyota RAV4 vs Kia Sportage engines and technology: Once again it is no secret the Kia Sportage is not about state of the art design, performance or fuel economy. It’s about a decent performance package and hidden older but more or less proven technology. The diesel engine is the only stand out in range but it does cost a lot to option so you have to be committed to extra maintenance for this sort of engine. Sharing the same tech with Hyundai doesn’t help the Kia differentiate the brand. The RAV4 is a tech leader in the class which is unusual for Toyota in it’s mainstream models. It has all the safety and Hybrid engine tech in a reliable package that no other manufacturer has at the price range. It does make the Kia look overpriced and dated.
The conclusion to the new Toyota RAV4 vs Kia Sportage comparison is simple: The Sportage when released was competitive with the other brands at the time of release but no longer. It also doesn’t have the price advantage and needs it’s 7 year warranty for piece of mind due it it’s less than average reliability and durability history. While the Sportage looks great it still a Kia and we’d still prefer the Hybrid and safety tech package at the same price offered in the RAV4.
