2012 Mazda CX-5 vs Nissan X-Trail Review

Here is a comparison between the 2012 Mazda CX-5 and Nissan X-Trail. The X-Trail reviewed here has been around since 2007 but this review relates to the 2010 update with the new CVT gearbox and other refinements. The comparison between  specification and performance of both models are listed below.

We genuinely like the latest X-Trail due to its individual styling on the outside which can’t be confused with any other make or model. The interior is also one best designs for families and active people. There are so many places to store your items. The only flaw is the quality of materials which is quite good for 2007 but not for 2012. Sure an all new model is probably on the way in a year or two but this model still works and work considering. All except the 2WD X-Trail though, its needs more than a 2 litre engine in 2012.

We still can’t say much about the on road performance of the current X-Trail since we haven’t driven the updated CVT version yet. However based on the specifications it looks like a decent car to drive. Only the petrol version has a CVT rather than the 6 speed automatic on the diesel. Based on drives of the original series this X-Trail should be inoffensive and capable just not memorable. The AWD system is an on demand arrangement but has a variety of electronic programs for off road traction control. Based on specifications it is probably one of the better versions.

The 2012 Mazda CX-5 is an all new model and the replacement for the stylish CX-7 and the older Tribute. We have yet to drive the CX-5 since we are considering buying a ute based SUV as a replacement but when and if we do we’ll definitely post a drive report. That said we’ve already check it out in the showroom and can report that the CX-5 is a more conventional design than its predecessors both inside and outside. It’s exterior is not stylish but can be described as modern looking with hints of Hyundai and BMW to its lines. The interior is likewise modern an easy to use with good quality materials and ambiance. There is nothing we could complain or praise about it – all very Mazda.

Based purely on comparing specifications the diesel variants of the CX-5 and X-trail models are the pick due to their low fuel use and engine performance. It’s a pity they cost more than the petrol versions and recouping the purchase price vs cost of fuel is unlikely.
