Welcome to another small SUV comparison, this time it’s the Holden Trax vs all new Honda HR-V comparison. Welcome to the all new Honda HR-V a re-incarnation of the original and strangely unpopular model. We drove the old HR-V years ago as part of the run up to purchasing the Suzuki Grand Vitara 3 door, The Grand Vitara won and was primarily chosen for it’s off road capabilities. In the mean time the world has changed and in 2015 4Wd is not a requirement so the HR-V finally finds it market slot but who knows what the class would be like if Honda had continued developing that model?
Holden Trax vs Honda HR-V exterior: The Holden Trax is a conservative but OK looking car. It doesn’t hide its size well looking like a pregnant Guppy (fish) overall, the front is beaver the rear a bit like an elephant sitting. The HR-V on the other hand looks like a 2015 model being less conservative and as sporty you can get for a small SUV. We prefer the HR-V styling in real life than in pictures. A win to the HR-V in the category.
Holden Trax vs Honda HR-V interior: Basically there’s no competition the HR-V has the highest quality materials and arguably best interior styling ‘smaller’ SUV in this class. Touch screens are the future whether you like it or not and the HR-V’s work well but also looks good. (Note that it’s not iPad quick) The dashboard and details all look and feel like it belongs in a more expensive class. The hard plastics are mostly beyond reach but thankfully still look good. The only issue we have is the long front passenger air vent – no idea why? Sure if you look under carpet you’ll find short cuts in the finish but at least its not like the Trax which doesn’t hide the cheaper parts. If the Holden Trax was clearly targeted at the less expensive of the class it would be acceptable but not when it’s price just under the HR-V and it really grates if you bought the top range model for over $30 is still looks cheaper, you must be blind if you willing part your hard earned cash for it.
Holden Trax vs Honda HR-V eĀ engine and technology: The updated and optional turbo engine in the Trax means it is able to compete with the new SUVs like the HR-V with their larger but non-turbo engines for most models in the range. There aren’t too many tech features beyond the norm of a connected in car entertainment system to write about in the Trax. The Honda on the other hand has the roof length sun roof, lane, auto braking etc.. on the top range model which makes it almost worth the extra money.

To conclude we think the Honda easily has the presentation edge. The HR-V does look and feel good overall – very good package. The only thing that currently let’s the side down is pricing, as expected with any new model. However since it is based on the Honda Jazz we expected slightly cheaper entry point. That said the extra quality of materials and safety features help justify the price. The Holden Trax is not cheap and is dated in terms of looks and feel even though it’s been on sale for about a year. Unfortunately the Trax is one model that really needs a lower price to compete. Even if you think you’re getting a good discount the competition in the same price range is even better – for the long term.
