Here's the page review and specification comparison between the Toyota Hilux and the all new Mazda BT-50 to be released in November 2011.

Although the Ford Ranger and the Mazda BT-50 are based on the same bits underneath the exterior of both are recognizably different. on the outside and interior treatments. They have more in common than say other shared platforms like the Mazda3, Ford Focus and Volvo C30.

Since we haven't driven the all new BT-50 yet, the following will be updated with the drive report when we get a chance. Mazda has said that the BT-50 will be focused on the driver's enjoyment while the Ford will be more commercial. But seriously don't believe the marketing. Just remember they may drive different but it is highly unlikely that they will be able to handle even as well as a basic Toyota Corolla. These types of cars designed to carry loads not road races.

2012 Mazda BT-50

2012 Toyota Hilux

We prefer the external design of the Hilux compared to the modern BT-50. That said the Hilux hasn't dated too much despite being on the market for a few years now compared to the already old VW Amarok. The BT-50 is a modern take of the light commercial and will take some time to get used to.

However the the BT-50 has a great looking and feeling interior, we like it. It is modern and car like although the materials are hard plastics like the Ford Ranger and Hilux. This is nether good or bad considering that they are ultimately commercial vehicles and unlikely that soft finishes would not last long in a commercial environment.  All said the quality looks good and certain up to car standards.

But it seems like the manufacturers are forgetting that these types of cars are often customized with communication systems and often home to lots of office equipment like pens, folders and so forth. There is some oddments space but not as much as older models. Not all are going to be bought by private owners.
