Here's the review for the all new 2012 Ford Ranger (PX series) as first released in October 2011. The significance of the 'Ranger T6' is that it was developed by Ford Australia and to be sold everywhere else in the world - which makes it unique. After all no other Australian manufacturer can currently boast this claim. The other important thing about the the new Ranger is a completely new series from the decades old prior model. Furthermore despite sharing a common basis with the Mazda BT-50 like various other models their model range look visibly different. First impressions on the Ford Ranger are good with simple commercial underbody design and car like new interior. It is physically bigger than the old model and reminded us of the F150 of the late 1980's. |

The Ford Ranger's interior is modern and more impressive to look at even in basic trim compared to Hilux. The 'boom-box' centre console will appeal to the intended market. Besides looking good the new Ford Ranger's interior also feels well made but the materials are hard plastics so don't look to closely. The car like theme however does not make it to the divers position which is more up right and what we think is a great compromise between car and commercial vehicle. However the in-cabin oddments storage and mounting points is good but not great. The most disappointing part is the integrated stereo system which while looks great cannot be removed and replaced with aftermarket systems with customized GPS or the expected iPod or iPhone connectivity. The exterior of the 2012 Ranger is good looking, the top range Widetrack version in particular will have tradies drooling thanks to its factory customisation and rugged looking add-ons. Ford design themes work well with the boxy shape but it could date quicker like the Amarok - only time will tell. Overall and without a drive report we like it, especially
the Widetrack version because if we have a top range version we want to be
able to see the difference! However we think that the Hilux will still appeal to the
commercial customer who change their cars regularly while the home consumer
will have to think hard about the Ranger. We like both for different reasons
but in all honestly we probably go for the Hilux due to the ability to
customize both exterior and interior, which we know is one of the the key
reasons for
buying this type of car. |
