The main Hayabusa site is down again. I’m not happy about it and can’t do anything cause it seems that even the webs host is completely down. It makes me wonder whether it money well spent. Apologies to everyone. Hopefully they’ll get on to it asap.

Windows Vista in October Part 2

As I reinstall the old XP machine I am impressed by how fast it runs on updated hardware. All the programs run much faster when in XP. Bearing in mind that Vista and XP are mere operating systems it really hit home how badly designed Vista is from a performance point of view.

Note that Vista needs at least a week as it sorts itself out and transmits your personal details to MS (cynical) but it does get more stable and slightly faster over time.

As for those who want a business case to keep Windows XP:
– Set up 2 machines with Vista and one with XP.
– Show performance of 2 machine from boot and to running your business apps – if they work!
– Show actual dollar cost of 2 machines.
I guarantee that this simple comparison is all you need.

Anyway when it came time to set up the notebook with wireless and wired together with phone internet access it was clear the Vista attempts to make setup difficult. I just couldn’t work it out in the 30 minutes I have spent so far. Even more telling was that VPN does not work in Vista.

Sure setting up XP’s VPN feature are not exactly intuitive but Vista’s VPN feature simply doesn’t work. I won’t go into detail you’ll just have to try for you self.

One more thing – Microsoft Outlook Web Access app does not work in IE7!

Windows Vista in October Part 1

I’ve been stuck with using Windows Vista I am performing renovations as my other PC. It has become clear to me that if you use Vista you can’t use your favorite older programs. Even more annoying is that you can’t share your videos with others (natively) since it puts DRM on everything. The only way is to get a other company’s video editing program. (Also some of my favorite games won’t work.)

The Media center part of Vista is still proving a challenge. It promises so much yet fails to deliver. For example changing channels sometime takes forever and that annoying recording function really !!!###!!!! me. So it still does not show the name of the program I’m watching – this simple thing is a standard feature of DTV. By contrast the Mac Mini is so simple to use and works as you would expect. Press record and it records until you tell it to stop or until it runs out of drive space and it even show the name of the program you’re watching.

Hopefully my older PC will be up and running by the end of the week and I’ll be happy again.
