Introduction Here is a comparison between the Honda CR-V and the updated 2010 Land Rover Freelander2. The two cars are not in the same category due to price. The base model Freelander is approx $3000 more than the top range CRV. But both are about the same size so it is the brand and marketing that you are buying. Of course the higher price tag means that you can expect more quality, equipment and capability. However it is not the huge difference between them - but where there is a difference you do notice it. The most noticeable thing about the Freelander is the more substantial feel of the dashboard but it is let down by cheaper looking plastics.

The exterior of the Freelander2 is an update of the original model which has been around since the early 2006 - hence it conservative and definitely old school compared to the best of the class Mazda CX-7. Even compared to the CR-V the Freelander's lines are not timeless and is aging. In the showroom it does not look like a premium priced car. The interior design is likewise essentially the same as the previous models. Nice materials like better carpets add to a more luxurious environment than any of the top range small SUVs we have been in recently - including the VW Tiguan. The choice of materials and design are 'old' but it still looks good. The commanding seating position fees higher than most and likable. Overall the interior is car like and a nice place to be and the only thing the differentiates it from the rest. It is not as practical as some of its competitors though. Is the higher price justified for the slightly more up market feel? That's up to you to decide - we don't think so. |

Mechanically the Freelander2 has the latest updates to the 4WD systems and engines. In the past the engines have been pathetic. But with this update comes much better engine option including stop/start technology which means the engine turns its self off and starts automatically in traffic like the Toyota Prius which should same some petrol especially in the V6 version. Incidentally the V6 on the Freelander is old and uneconomical it uses a claimed 15.8 litres around town which LandCruiser ballpark for fuel use. The 4WD system is electronic based and has an variety of settings. When compared, the CRV is still a more convenient to live with car with noticeably lots of places to put things and the feeling of space. The Freelander is probably more a competitor to the smaller VW Tiguan in terms of the feeling of quality which is about the same but different to the CRV. However the optional extras on the Freelander, like the better leather trim and carpets push the Tiguan and CRV down into a lower level. So our final opinion after seeing one? We are attracted to the interior feel but saw some quality issues but the lack of an interesting exterior not enough equipment for the price to investigate any further Ie. to drive it. In terms of power the V6 RAV4 is probably the better choice since the Freelander does not exactly have the necessary prestige image to most to justify the extra price.
