Toyota Prado reviews and comparisons have been moved here!

Introduction Here's a comparison between the Honda CR-V and the Suzuki Grand Vitara. Both models are 2010 models. Although you know that the CRV is our favorite small SUV but you should also know that the Suzuki Grand Vitara also one of or favorites. The Suzuki Grand Vitara in the current model reviewed here has been around since 2006. PL's had the previous model and Brad had the previous version to that and driven the latest model. I haven't so sort of impartial to the their comments! The key reasons why we always give the Grand Vitara as go is that is has genuine off-road capability and reliability. Other than that it always looks good. |

In terms of looks the Grand Vitara is easily identified as an early 2000 design. Unlike others in the class it has real 4wd and off-road ability. Sure in 2010 the current model has been around for a while but it is still quite a good looking car albeit conservative compared to the say the CRV or the Mazda CX-7. The interior of the Grand Vitara represents an earlier conservative time yet it does not feel down market like a number of competitors. Sure there are hard plastics here and there but the combination of materials, color scheme and useful LCD display items on the dash does lift the visual appeal. Suzuki has a record of completely updating the interior design just after a model reaches its mid-life and all Suzuki models also have long life cycles 5-6 years compared to 3-4 year cycle for its competitors. When the interiors are compared, the Honda still has the edge
in terms of day to day usefulness and has some better interior materials but it is not that much
different. That said the Grand Vitara's interior packaging is easily
better than the Subaru Forester or X-Trail as examples. |

The mechanical aspect of the Grand Vitara is where there are significant differences from its competitors. The Grand Vitara has a stronger chassis and mechanicals with proper low range gearing along with mechanical centre and rear differentials locking mechanisms. It does not need electronic '4WD' modes as per it competitors because it has the real thing! The petrol engine Grand Vitara drives like a real car, the 4 or V6 engine has low down power and there is enough refinement it feels like it will last forever. The steering and handling is honestly just as good as the competition having the same but different level road feel as the others but overall quite good. I think ride quality is pretty good too. It will probably be a better long distance tourer and also to go off road. It is relatively quiet on the road for the petrol version - better than RAV4 for example. The Grand Vitara can also be bought as a smaller 3 door version, the only one on the market. It comes with the 2.4 litre engine and it actually goes quite well compared to larger 5 door version. There is also the diesel engine version and the V6 version. The V6 engine is that best one to go for though. The Suzuki Grand Vitara is a very decent small SUV if you want an off-road capable 4WD and on-road compromise. We've seen and been in places where you would never expect to go. The only problems with the Grand Vitara is with the matched price and the lack of swoopy exterior design. I think even more equipment or special editions will help since the Grand Vitara since it is just a good as the others around town and better off-road. We still like it and is one of our top 3 favorite small SUVs in 2010. It's like a mini-Prado.
