Introduction Here's a comparison between the Honda CR-V and the Toyota RAV4. These models are two of the most popular small SUVs in the country. Note that the RAV4 will have mid-life update update later in 2010. The funky 90's original and more conservative follow ups and now the arguably more stylish RAV4 has always been popular. It has always been a small road focused SUV that has appealed to many not because it is a Toyota but because the package works.

In terms of looks the Honda is still more stylish while the RAV4 looks conservative but still nice. The forth coming 2011 RAV4 continues the curve theme and is styled for better looks but has echos of models by Audi. Neither of course are as stylish as the Mazda CX-7. The interior of the RAV4 looks modern and has youthful design touches like the 2 layered dash and large buttons to activate stuff. The materials used are what you'd expect from a Toyota. Sure its all good quality stuff and will wear well but the toy like design does not look as good as compared to the CR-V. In all honestly when comparing the two cars reminds us how the two differentiate themselves as brands. Both look good, work well, yet are recognizably a Honda or Toyota

The mechanical aspect of the RAV4 is the benchmark Toyota meaning reliable. There are lots of variants including 2WD (front) only models and a 3.5 litre V6 which is unique to the small SUV class. The RAV4's 4wd system is an on demand system with a few extra features like traction control, hill start and decent. So in terms of 4WD technology the RAV4 has a few. However it is missing more rudimentary things like a diff lock and low range gearing featured in one or two other brands. The Honda currently does not have any notable off-road features or a V6 engine option. We have not driven the latest RAV4 yet so no comment there. What we can say is that based on specifications the AWD version of the RAV4 has more potential off-road capability than the CR-V. The V6 RAV4 would be a decent drive on road due to the extra power but the 4 cylinder models not as good as the CR-V due to the lack of extra gears. If it has been given additional refinement with the change to the new model it should be fine although others do not agree! If you don't care about about off-road ability then the soon to be released 2WD (front) only RAV4 would seem like a good deal BUT there are other small SUVs that are superior dollar value. However if you want performance the V6 RAV4 is a fast mover!
