Introduction Here's a comparison between the Honda CR-V and the Mitsubishi Outlander. The Outlander has been around in various model generations since 2001. The current model is the 2nd generation released in 2005 but significantly updated with the new corporate face front end interior enhancements and in late 2009. The Outlander is also used by Peugeot 4007 and Citroen C-Crosser but the European badged models are not available world wide. Each model has different front ends designs and interior enhancements. We like the new front of the Outlander and think the car is nicely designed and up to date overall.

In terms of exterior design the most interesting and attractive is the CR-V but the Outlander looks pretty good too with the a sporty aggressive front end. We like both of them. The top range Outlander in white as pictured is one of our favorites. The interior of the CRV is still more practical and quality feel than the Outlander. The Outlander has just too much open plastic on the dash and too many seam lines or joins. Only the top range VRX luxury with leather interior does it feel better than the CRV. However we do prefer the Outlander to the X-Trail. The Outlander also has a 7 seat option. One interior feature we liked about the Outlander was the stereo. It is arguably has the best stereo in the class. The worse was the tinny door closing feel. While we liked the exterior design, in the end the Outlander's interior gave us the impression of wasted space and being sparsely equipped. The Outlander is not particularly cheap so there is an expectation that it should at least feel more than basic. Only the top range models have that required feel. That said it does have all the equipment that you'd expect you just don't 'see' it. |

The Outlander has had the option of two engines and 3 transmissions including a CVT or 'gearless' - which we didn't try and 2WD and AWD systems. Along with the RAV4 it 3 litre V6 engine which should satisfy those after a bit more performance. The 4wd system in the top range models (VR and VRX) is one of the most advanced in the segment with a number of settings and modes. We like it because it gives it better off-road ability. It is unlikely to be better than the Landcruisers or the Challenger class but it should keep it ahead of most of the small SUVs. OK the result of the test drive was that we liked the Outlander - it has sufficient on road refinement as per its competitors. Otherwise it does nothing exceptional worth writing about. Trying the V6 would have been nice but we can only assume that it would be nicer with the extra power. After sales warranty it also way above the rest so you shouldn't have any problems if you buy one.
