Introduction Here's a comparison between the Honda CR-V and the Hyundai ix35. The 2010 ix35 is the latest small SUV released by Hyundai to the world wide market. It is a replacement for the odd looking Tuson. This was an interesting comparison since the CRV model we have been comparing all the small SUVs against has been around for over 3 years and due of replacement in the next 2 and being compared with one of the newest designs as we write this (July 2010). So far we think the ix35 is a pretty decent car so read on...

The exterior design of the ix35 is right up to date and a combination of attractive curves and edges. It is a huge leap from past models and clearly a design theme for all their new models for a next few years. (Eg i45 the Sonata replacement) It looks good in real life and pictures. Without the badges you cannot tell it was a made by a Korean company. We initially thought it was European Ford model. The interior design has been updated with the latest European design touches and materials. It is a much nicer place to be than previous Hyundai models and a very car like. It not as nice as the CRV or Tiguan. A few notable issues with the design is the very cheap looking but sturdy lower center console and door trim, door armrest and handle that is set too far back and the seemingly scattered switches. Overall the interior is better than the Subaru but not the Honda which shows how far Korean cars have come. The utility aspect of the ix35 does not match the CRV. While it probably has the same amount of space as the other small SUVs there is still not enough for the average family but at least it has all the equipment you'd expect in car in this price range.

Mechanically the ix35 comes in 2WD only or AWD models with 3 different engine options. The main feature of the AWD system is the lockable center differential. The 4WD system is not the most advanced but comparable to the CRV but not the more able VW Tiguan. We have not driven it yet so no drive report. However based on various other reports it is not class leading. We'll probably check it out ourselves later this year. The engines are based on existing versions and nothing outstanding. No different from the other brands. However it now has a diesel variant which may interest new buyers. By all accounts even in specification do not offer anything special to write about. It is just another nice small SUV. In regards to pricing, it is approx $2000-3000 less than equivalent from other manufacturers the top range ix35 Highlander is very good value due to its equipment list which includes a huge panorama sunroof. The 2WD only model is really well priced and definitely worth looking at if you are buying any small car not just a SUV.
