Here's a comparison between the Honda CR-V and the Great Wall Motors X240 otherwise known as the GWM Hover. Both models are 2010 models being used for this comparison. The Honda CR-V in its 2010 has been around for years and the CRV replacement does not appear due till about 2012. The GWM X240 is new to most parts of the world being one of the first model the new Chinese car maker is releasing world wide. It too has been around for a while but due to its home market only it is a 'new' model to most of us. Due to the lack of brand and model knowledge it is the cheapest normal size 4WD in the market. The selling point of being the cheapest in this case means lots of superficial equipment rather than any engineering depth. However in terms of specifications it appears
to be a good match for other small and compact SUVs. However driving the car
and perhaps long term ownership will test your patience and others on the
road. |

In terms the exterior design the X240 is tidy but ageing rapidly. The use of lots of chrome does distract us from the seemingly thinner paint squared of panels. It Ok in isolation but not so with the CRV or ay of the other competitors including the Grand Vitara. The interior of the GWM X240 is more commercial than passenger. The cheaper but hard plastics and old design concepts do not make it a nice place to sit in. Sure there are few 'blanks' in the dashboard unlike other model in the same price range but everything just feels down market compared to the others. Despite the exterior size it feels cramped. The technology used in the X240 is traditional frame and chassis which should make it durable in the long term and off road. However that means truck like driving or handling. The engine is from Mitsubishi so should be reliable if put together well. Despite the capacity this is a slow car even slower and more uncivilzed to drive than the base CX-7. It is currently only available as a manual which limits its appeal. The only positive is the relative cheap price and potential off-road capability. |
